Three Step Spot Removal

Carpet Spot Removal - spill - Spot Cleaner

It never fails – as soon as you have your carpet cleaned, someone is going to spill on it, usually somewhere near the center of the room. Don’t panic and don’t wait.

Spot removal requires immediate action to prevent the spot from becoming a stain. Here are three simple steps for carpet spot removal of the most common household spills.

1. Squeegee and Blot up as much of the spill as you can with a clean absorbent cloth before adding any water or cleaning solution. Why? Adding liquid can cause the spot to spread.

2. Spray a cleaning solution to an absorbent cloth and rub into the spot. This will allow more of the spill to transfer to the cloth. We recommend a non-toxic, all-natural carpet cleaning solution (not dish soap).

3. If the spot remains, spray a cleaning solution sparingly to the spot. Rub it in with your finger or with a brush. Then blot with a cloth. Cotton terry towel works well.

Tips for Special Needs:

Pet Urine
It is important to blot up as much as possible before adding any liquid such as water or a cleaning solution. Use an enzyme solution to neutralize odor, such as Biokleen Bac-out (available in Whole Foods) or Nature’s Miracle (available in most pet supply stores)

Ink
Blot up before adding solution. Ink can easily bleed. Then apply cleaner to a clean towel and blot up the spot. Finally, spray what’s left of the spot.

Candle Wax and Crayon
Ice the spot and then scrape up as much as possible. Then use an iron over a cotton towel to absorb remaining wax. Be careful not to burn the carpet. If wax color remains, use a cleaning solution.

Natural Fiber Rugs and Carpet
Wool is porous and quickly absorbs stains. It also retains water, so use as little liquid as possible. Sisal, jute and seagrass require a dry cleaning solution, such as Host. Ask us about our Host spot cleaning kit.

Red, Red Wine
For red wine spills, don’t delay. Blot first with a dry cloth and remove as much of the liquid as possible. Then add a carpet cleaning solution and blot.

Spots Become Stains
Spots that remain long enough to dye the carpet are called stains. Not all stains can be removed without damaging the carpet or rug. Be careful to avoid over-scrubbing as it can result in carpet fiber distortion. Then you’ve replaced the stain with a hole in your carpet. Leave a few stains as a reminder that we do the best we can in an imperfect world.

Avoid Common Spot Removal Mistakes

Avoid using a sudsy cleaner, such as dish or laundry detergent. This will leave a sticky residue, causing quick re-soiling.

Avoid bleaching the spot, which removes all color and weakens carpet fibers. Avoid chlorine bleach.

Folex? Folex Spot Remover is sold in most grocery and hardware stores and is effective on many spots, but it does leave a residue. Use it sparingly.

Cheap Carpet Cleaning Turns Very Expensive

Often the cheap carpet cleaning deal can turn very expensive, as this man in Bakersfield found out. His problem is common with wet cleaners (steam cleaners, aka hot water extraction cleaners), especially when the technician is poorly trained.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A family contacted 23ABC after the carpet cleaning company they hired made matters worse and they ended up hiring another company to fix the problem.

We looked into how homeowners can educate themselves to keep a similar scenario from happening to them.

“At first, I thought he did a good job. However, after a couple of days the house started smelling like mold and the carpet was still wet,” said Rick Keel.

How Much Water Are They Using?

What is Very Low Moisture Carpet Cleaning?

Our carpet cleaning methods are Very Low Moisture (VLM) cleaning systems.

The Problem with Conventional Carpet Cleaning

Many hot water extraction methods (“steam-cleaning” or HWE) can over wet your carpet.  When carpet is wet several things can occur.Very Low Moisture carpet cleaning (VLM)

  • You can’t use the room all day.
  • Soil is pushed down into carpet, backing and pad and may not come out.
  • Spots return As the water evaporates, it draws or wicks some of the dirt back up to the surface.
  • Carpet can separate from the backing.
  • Carpet may stretch and ripple.
  • Dye in carpet or rug may bleed and discolor.
  • Mold or Mildew may grow if carpet does not dry in 24-48 hours.

We use use very low moisture carpet cleaning methods, which may also be called “dry carpet cleaning.” Water is needed and used, but we find we can get carpets and rugs just as clean – even cleaner – using a fraction of the water used by “steam cleaners.”

Very Low Moisture Carpet Cleaning in Three Steps.

When we clean your carpet with our unique Teri-Towel system, we employ three simple steps:

1. Vacuuming.
We start our process with a thorough vacuuming. Soil comes up more easily if it is dry. Once we get up all we can with dry vacuuming, we’re ready for the tougher soil.

2. Spraying.
We apply a light spray of our unique, all natural cleaning solution (no harsh chemicals) to your carpets and allow the solution to begin breaking down the soil. We use just 2-3 gallons of cleaning solution in a typical home. That’s a tenth of what is used by hot water extraction cleaners.

3. Extraction.
Our next step is what differentiates us from many other carpet cleaners. Instead of using a wand to suck up the solution, we use an oscillating machine with clean, absorbent towels to soak up the solution as well as the soil from your carpet. This provides necessary agitation as well as extraction of solution and soil.

Less solution means less drying time. It also means less chemicals, so your carpet is left feeling soft, not crunchy. There’s no sticky residue so carpet does not easily resoil. If you want to see what came up, ask your cleaning technician to show you the used towels. We’ll launder them and use them again.

Very Low Moisture carpet cleaning saves water and is good for the environment. It also saves your carpet. But the main reason our customers prefer Very Low Moisture carpet cleaning is CARPET IS CLEAN AND STAYS CLEAN!

Cleaning Sisal and other Natural Fiber Carpets

cleaning sisal carpet and rugs- Round Pond Estate Winery in Rutherford - Napa Valley CASisal, jute, seagrass, hemp and other natural fiber rugs are finding their way into more homes as people want the natural beauty that surrounds their home reflected in their home. While wool is the original natural carpet fiber, sisal and jute rugs are highly desirable in some homes.

But, cleaning sisal rugs and other natural fiber rugs takes care. Natural vegetable fibers are very absorbent. They will shrink and expand with changes in the humidity. Sisal rugs and other natural fiber carpets can show streaks or change color when water is applied. Steam cleaning or hot water extraction cleaning is never recommended for cleaning sisal rugs and other natural fiber carpets.

Cleaning Sisal Rugs

HOST Dry Extraction cleaning is the recommended system for cleaning sisal rugs, sisal carpet and most other natural fiber rugs:

Merida Meridian

Do not steam clean or wet shampoo your sisal rug. Plant fibers are highly absorbent, so when exposed to liquids or excessive dampness, they are subject to some shrinking and puckering. Merida recommends using a dry extraction carpet cleaning system. These dry carpet cleaning systems are by far the most successful method of cleaning all natural fiber rugs. We recommend testing the cleaner on an inconspicuous section of the rug before trying to clean a more obvious area. Such dry extraction carpet cleaners as Host, Capture and others…

Sisal Rugs Direct

It is important to control the amount of moisture during cleaning. NEVER steam clean, wet shampoo or any other method that involves water saturation on a natural fiber rug. It is recommended that a dry cleaning process be used. We carry a Host Cleaning Kit for your convenience. It cleans up to a 250 sq. ft. area. Host is a low moisture powder (they call them sponges) that absorbs dirt that can then be vacuumed away.  Cleaning Sisal Rugs in Napa County

cleaning sisal carpet - Round Pond Estate Winery in Rutherford - Napa Valley CAI don’t usually serve Napa Valley, but when Round Pond Estate Winery called for help with their water-stained sisal rug, I had to go. The HOST Dry Carpet Cleaning System is the only way to go for cleaning sisal rugs and carpet. The HOST material provides just enough moisture to clean these natural fibers, but little enough so the sisal maintains its original color and shape. I’m wishing I had asked them to throw in a bottle of wine with the deal.

Can This Carpet Be Saved?

This carpet needs to be replaced. The previous owner of this mobile home was a 90-year-old man who spilled a lot and could not clean up. Who can blame him? He was doing well to be living independently this long.

The new owners were not ready to replace the carpet and wanted to see if there was any way the carpet could be saved and made tolerable. They were delighted with the results of Advanced Dry Carpet Care’s Teri-Towel Dry Carpet Cleaning system and some additional spot-treatment. Here is the living room and dining room. Nan, the owner wrote this a week after we cleaned these carpets:

Thanks so much for coming back to “host” the stained areas of our carpet.  They dried much lighter.  I so appreciate your attention to details and knowledge of carpet care.
Our realtor stopped by on the 4th of July and could not believe that it was the same carpet – he thought we’d bought new!  He was very impressed.
Take care, Dave.  We will be in touch when it is time to clean again and will refer you liberally to our friends.
Sincerely,
Nan
