Green Carpet Cleaning

Our Green Carpet Cleaning Systems.

Of course, anybody can use trendy slogans, green ink and make extravagant claims – environmentally safe – eco friendly – green cleaning. But, we can demonstrate it. Our dry carpet cleaning systems are earth friendly. We remove tough stains and odors without using toxic chemicals.

Green Carpet Cleaning – It’s More Than a Slogan

Here’s why we can make the claim:

  • Our green carpet cleaning systems use less solution: less water, less chemicals and less waste water going down the drain and into our creeks and rivers.
Steam carpet cleaning systems, such as Coit and Stanley Steemer, use gallons of solution in a typical room. With our HOST Dry Carpet Cleaning system, we use NO solution, not even water. With our Teri-Towel Dry Carpet Cleaning system, we use about 64 fluid ounces in a typical living room.
  • Our HOST Dry Cleaning system uses NO WATER. The HOST sponges™ are organic cellulosic fibers which contain moisture and detergent. After cleaning your carpet, the material is vacuumed up and disposed of – returned to the earth.
  • green carpet cleaning - green seal certifiedThe chemicals we use are non-toxic, natural and eco friendly. Our HOST Dry Cleaning system uses 100% plant-based material. The Green Seal is awarded to products that meet the standards of performance, safety and reliability. Because HOST Dry Carpet Cleaner achieved the Green Seal Certification, you can be sure that it will promote a cleaner, healthier environment, cause less toxic pollution, reduce waste and conserve resources and habitats. We use only PFAS-free cleaning chemicals and no stain protection, which contain hazardous chemicals.
  • In fact, no other carpet cleaning product has the variety of independent certification and research that HOST Dry Carpet Cleaner has. This summary of independent research and certifications shows that HOST is environmentally preferred and the best choice for green, clean and dry carpet that looks its best every day. green carpet cleaning - Bio-Kleen
  • Our Teri-Towel System is also a green carpet cleaning system, using Biokleen products. All Biokleen products are free of chlorine, optical brighteners and phosphates and greatly reduce the risk to your family’s health, and our environment. No animal testing. (Visit Biokleen website)
  • Both HOST and Biokleen products are safe for people with allergies and chemical sensitivities. Both of our green carpet cleaning methods use only the safest, highest quality ingredients without using common allergens, asthmagens, synthetic fragrances, and artificial dyes. Asthma sufferers love us because our cleaning does not trigger their asthma.
  • We provide green upholstery cleaning, using true steam cleaning – not hot water extraction. We use only distilled water with no cleaning chemicals added. Stubborn spots are cleaned with Biokleen green cleaning products.
  • Electric Equipment. If you’ve used a traditional truck-mount style carpet cleaner, you may have noticed that a gasoline internal combustion engine is running the whole time, heating and pumping water into your home. Our cleaning machines are all electric (clean energy). There’s much less impact on the environment with our cleaning methods.

Is Carpet Stain Protection Dangerous?

Dave and my niece. Keep her PFAS-free!

Many carpet cleaners offer stain protection as an add-on service after carpet cleaning. We don’t. Research has raised concerns about the negative health and environmental impacts of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) chemicals, which are or were commonly used in stain protection products including Scotchgard, Gore-Tex and Teflon. Even though some manufacturers have stopped using PFAS chemicals, many replacement chemicals are suspected to also be harmful.

PFAS chemicals are a group of synthetic chemicals that have been used in a variety of consumer products, including carpet cleaning products, because of their ability to repel water and stains. However, they are also known as “forever chemicals” because they do not break down in the environment and can accumulate in the human body over time.

Research has linked PFAS exposure to a range of negative health effects, including cancer, reproductive and developmental issues, and immune system problems. PFAS chemicals have also been found to be harmful to wildlife and the environment.

PFAS chemicals? It's not worth the risks

PFAS are nasty. They virtually never break down in the environment and are found in people, fish, and wildlife all over the world, with no realistic solution in sight. Dr. Joseph Allen, Director of the Healthy Buildings Program at the Harvard University School of Public Health dubbed them “forever chemicals,” “a group of toxic chemicals that may be associated with testicular cancer, kidney cancer, high cholesterol and suppression of vaccine effectiveness in children.” They are released by our consumer products, including carpets, bit by bit, through ordinary wear and tear. They make their way into our bodies and household dust. They are washed down the drain, contaminating wastewater and related biosolids used as compost. They are released to surface water and groundwater from the industrial facilities that manufacture and use them.

Which Carpet is the Healthiest? Busting the Myth on Carpet Claims, Bill Walsh, Healthy Building Network, March 2019 Newsletter (link below)

Given these concerns, Advanced Dry Carpet Care has made the decision to not use only PFAS-free cleaning products. That means we use no stain protection or other PFAS chemicals. We believe that it is important to prioritize the health and safety of our customers, our cleaning techs and the environment.

We use only eco-friendly cleaning products that are effective at removing stains and dirt without the use of harmful chemicals. These products are made with natural, biodegradable ingredients that are safe for use around children and pets, and do not have the same negative environmental impacts as PFAS chemicals.

To summarize, the use of stain protection and other PFAS chemicals in carpet cleaning products has the potential to cause negative health and environmental impacts. We have chosen to prioritize the well-being of our customers and the environment by using eco-friendly cleaning products that are free of these harmful chemicals.

How to Remove Candle Wax from Carpet or Upholstery

‘Tis the season for festive gatherings, twinkling lights, and, of course, the ambient glow of candles. As beautiful as they are, candles can sometimes leave behind a frustrating mess: wax drippings. Whether it’s on the lush carpet under your dining table, the elegant rug in your living room, or the upholstery of your favorite furniture pieces, wax spills are a common holiday season aftermath. However, there’s no need to let these mishaps dampen your festive spirit. With the right approach, removing candle wax is not only possible, but easy.

removing candle wax with a steamer

The key to effective wax removal lies in understanding the nature of wax and how it interacts with fabrics. When wax spills on a surface like a carpet, rug, or upholstery, it quickly hardens and adheres to the fibers. Traditional methods like scraping can cause damage to delicate fabrics and often leave behind a residue. This is where a steamer comes into play, offering a gentle yet effective solution.

Here’s the best way to clean wax from carpet, rugs or upholstery like your couch, recliner or church pews. Use a steamer. We use this Daimer KleenJet Pro Plus 300CS Steam Cleaner (I receive no $$ for this referral) but you can use a steamer that you may have for clothes.

Start by wrapping the steamer wand in a microfiber cloth. Microfiber is excellent for this task due to its high absorbency and gentle nature on fabrics. As you apply steam to the wax, the heat will soften and melt it, making it easier to absorb into the cloth. It’s important to change the microfiber cloth frequently during this process to ensure maximum efficiency and avoid spreading the wax.

Here’s a video: Cleaning Church Pews in Petaluma, in which I show how we remove candle wax from upholstery. Enjoy on Youtube, like and follow.

Remember, wax spills don’t have to be a permanent mark on your beautiful home furnishings. With the right tools and a bit of patience, you can effectively remove candle wax and keep your home – or church – looking pristine, even during the busiest and most festive times of the year.
